What Is Chrome Plating?

Chrome plating is a sophisticated process used to apply a thin layer of chromium to metal parts. This process enhances the appearance, durability, and corrosion resistance of the metal. Here’s a simple breakdown of how it works:

  1. Preparation: The metal part is first cleaned and prepped to ensure that the chromium layer adheres properly. This involves removing any old coatings and repairing any surface imperfections.
  2. Electroplating: The part is then connected to copper jigs and submerged in a plating tank. These tanks range from 600 to 1,000 liters and contain a solution of acids, bases, metals, and water. An electric current is passed through the solution, causing chromium ions to move from the solution and deposit onto the metal part.
  3. Plating Process: The process involves several steps, including:
    • Dissolving Chromium: Chromium is dissolved in the solution.
    • Electric Current: An electric current is used to transfer the dissolved chromium onto the metal part.
    • Plating Tanks: The parts are hung in large tanks where the plating occurs.
